{"id":1309,"date":"2022-07-18T17:40:06","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T17:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifmbanm.com\/blog\/?p=1309"},"modified":"2022-07-18T17:40:06","modified_gmt":"2022-07-18T17:40:06","slug":"ksr-on-ezra-klein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifmbanm.com\/blog\/?p=1309","title":{"rendered":"KSR on Ezra Klein"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I listened to this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/15\/opinion\/ezra-klein-podcast-kim-stanley-robinson.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\">https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/15\/opinion\/ezra-klein-podcast-kim-stanley-robinson.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>while sitting out on the deck with Covid the other day, and it kicked off some many interesting tangents that I had to follow up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bruno Latour and actor-network theory as an evolution of philosophy of science away from history+theory<\/li><li>Cognitive estrangement<\/li><li>Appropriate technology<\/li><li>The Paleolithic want-list (what makes humans happy): throwing things, watching fire, the thrill generated by accomplishing something hard, esp. with a group<\/li><li>stories around a fire -&gt; going to a movie -&gt; watching tv and talking about it with people -&gt; binge watching Netflix, each being a more-hollow simulacrum of the primordial experience<\/li><li>A book called \u201cThe Knowledge Machine\u201d<\/li><li>A seminar with the Dalai Lama in Tibet<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, altogether: work out what we want from first principles (social primate implications), and use technology in a sophisticated way to achieve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, I\u2019m impressed again with his gentle but insistent manner in presenting what he thinks.  Like his writing.  He doesn\u2019t flail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not surprised that this guy grew up in the milieu of the Bay Area in the 60s and 70s, and is friends with Gary Snyder.
