Have heard this read to me over the phone, but will pick up class packet tomorrow to quote:

The HS has articulated a new approach for HC identified students, which addresses some of the issues brought up at the Dec. meeting with Dr. McCarthy and Bill Humphreys.

This is very important news for high school age kids. I'll have the text to post tomorrow or tuesday. If you have a child entering 9th or in the HS already, please check your class description book for the new HC language.

Hi Robert,
Here's the text. A highlight is that the HC kids get prefered scheduling into the classes, very cool. And I "heard" that if freshman come in identified as HC could get AP classes as a freshman -- depending, of course on kid's capability.

"SW High School Highly Capable

Highly Capable Students from page 7 of “SWHS Course Description”

Those students identified at the district level as highly capable are generally the top 2-5% of the school population. Students striving for unique and more challenging chores work more independence and responsibility, and to have the intellectual curiosity to explore the possibility for more advanced skills are encouraged to take our most rigorous classes. These students, identified as HC, are, also, given the opportunity for:

Preferred scheduling
Individual academic planning
Internships in the community
Independent studies

Some rigorous course options of students may be:

Advanced Technology Classes
AP English
AP Statistics
Advanced World Language Classes
AP Biology
AP US History
Advanced Visual Art classes

Independent study classes (some independent courses that have been accessed in the past are):
IS Music Performance
IS Advanced French
IS AP Chemistry
IS Forensics
IS Genetics
IS Advanced Western Civilization
IS Advanced Spanish
IS Music Theory
IS Art

Students may consult with their counselor/s regarding any oportunties referenced above"
